What Happens When the Move Actually Goes Right

You’re not wondering if the movers will show up. You’re not staring out the window fifteen minutes past the arrival time, already stressed before they even get there.

The quote you got is the price you pay. No surprise charges when the truck pulls up. No weight-based estimates that mysteriously triple on moving day.

Your floors stay scratch-free. Your walls don’t get dinged. The furniture that took you years to collect doesn’t show up with new damage you’ll notice every time you walk past it.

You get updates when you need them. Questions get answered. The schedule holds. And when the last box comes off the truck, you’re thinking about unpacking—not about what went wrong.

We've Been Doing This Long Enough to Know

All Terrain Moving is owner-operated, fully insured, and bonded with extensive cargo insurance. Matt runs the business, and he’s the one you’ll talk to when you call.

We’ve handled moves across Suffolk and Nassau counties for years. That means we know the tight hallways in older West Islip homes, the shared entries in apartment complexes, and how to navigate busy parking situations without holding up your neighbors.

We’re DOT registered (DOT# 3706838, MC# 1340650), which matters more than most people realize until something goes wrong. It means accountability. It means you’re protected if anything happens. And it means we’re not just some guy with a truck.

Here's What Actually Happens on Moving Day

First, you get a written estimate before anything starts. We walk through what you’re moving, where it’s going, and what the job actually requires. No vague ranges or weight guesses.

On moving day, we show up in the window we gave you. The team protects your floors and common areas before anything gets carried out. Furniture gets disassembled if it needs to be. Fragile items get wrapped properly—not just tossed in a box with some newspaper.

Everything gets loaded strategically so it doesn’t shift during transport. Heavy items on the bottom, boxes stacked smart, nothing piled in a way that’s going to cause damage when we brake.

At the destination, we unload, reassemble what we took apart, and place items where you want them. You’re not dragging a couch across the room after we leave. And if something needs adjustment, we handle it before we’re done.

What's Included When You Book with Us

You’re getting local and long-distance moving, whether you’re going three blocks over or out of state. Residential or commercial. Small apartment or a 10,000 square foot house.

We pack if you need it. Full-service packing means we bring the materials, wrap everything correctly, and label boxes so you’re not hunting for your coffee maker on day three. Or you can pack yourself and we’ll just handle the heavy lifting.

Specialty items aren’t a problem. Pianos, pool tables, safes, fragile antiques—we’ve moved them before and we know how to do it without damage. And if you need short-term storage between moves, we’ve got that covered too.

West Islip has its share of older homes with narrow staircases and tricky layouts. We’ve navigated enough of them to know what works. And with Long Island seeing more people downsize or relocate due to housing costs, we’re used to helping families figure out what fits in the new place and what doesn’t.

How much does it cost to hire a moving company in West Islip?

Local moves in West Islip typically run between $100 and $200 per hour depending on how many movers you need and how much stuff you’re moving. A one-bedroom apartment with minimal furniture might only need two movers and take three hours. A four-bedroom house with a full basement and garage is going to take longer and require more people.

Long-distance moves get priced differently—usually based on distance and the total weight or volume of what you’re moving. That’s where binding estimates matter. A binding estimate locks in your price. A non-binding estimate can double or triple when the truck shows up, and you’re stuck because your stuff is already loaded.

We give you a written estimate upfront. What we quote is what you pay unless you add services or items that weren’t part of the original walkthrough. No surprise charges for stairs, no “fuel surcharges” that weren’t mentioned, no padding the hours because the job went faster than expected.

You need to be there at the start and at the end, but you don’t have to hover the whole time. At the beginning, we’ll do a final walkthrough to confirm what’s getting moved and answer any last-minute questions. At the end, you’ll need to do a quick check to make sure everything’s where it should be and sign off that the job’s complete.

During the actual loading and unloading, most people step out of the way. You’re not helping us carry boxes—that’s what you’re paying us for. Some clients run errands, some sit in another room and work, some follow the truck to the new place and get started on other things.

If you’ve got specific instructions about fragile items or where certain things need to go, it helps to be around for those moments. But you’re not required to stand there watching us wrap furniture for four hours. We’ll let you know if we need you.

If you’re packing yourself, have everything boxed and ready to go before we show up. Open boxes slow things down because we have to tape them shut and we don’t know if they’re packed safely. Loose items in drawers or on shelves mean extra trips and more time on the clock.

Clear a path from the door to the truck. If there’s snow, salt the walkway. If you’re in an apartment building, reserve the elevator and let the building know movers are coming. Some buildings require certificates of insurance ahead of time, and we can provide that—but we need a few days’ notice.

Disconnect appliances if they’re coming with you. We’ll move your washer and dryer, but we’re not unhooking gas lines or water hookups. Same with mounted TVs—if it’s bolted to the wall, take it down beforehand or let us know so we can plan for it.

If you’ve got items that aren’t going—stuff for donation, trash that needs to go out—mark it clearly or move it to a separate area. The last thing anyone wants is your grandmother’s antique dresser ending up on the curb because it was sitting next to the garbage bags.

We carry full insurance, bonding, and extensive cargo coverage. That’s not standard across the board—plenty of smaller moving companies operate without proper insurance, and if something breaks, you’re out of luck.

There are two types of coverage in the moving industry: basic released value protection and full value protection. Basic coverage is included automatically but it only covers 60 cents per pound per item. So if we damage your 50-pound flat-screen TV, you’re getting $30. That doesn’t replace much.

Full value protection costs extra, but it means if something gets damaged or lost, we repair it, replace it, or reimburse you for the current market value. For high-value items—antiques, electronics, artwork—it’s worth it. For a standard move with mostly Ikea furniture and everyday stuff, basic coverage is usually fine.

We also recommend taking photos of valuable items before the move. If something does get damaged, it’s a lot easier to file a claim when there’s a clear before-and-after. And if you’re moving anything extremely valuable or irreplaceable, consider transporting it yourself. No amount of insurance replaces your grandmother’s wedding ring if it goes missing.

If you’re moving during peak season—May through September, especially on weekends and at the end of the month—book at least three to four weeks out. Everyone’s lease ends on the 30th, everyone wants to move on a Saturday, and there are only so many crews available.

Off-peak moves between October and April give you more flexibility. You can sometimes book a week or two out and still get your preferred date. Weekdays are almost always easier to schedule than weekends, and you’ll usually get a better rate too.

We’ve handled same-day moves when someone’s in a bind—last-minute eviction, sudden job relocation, emergency situations. But the more notice you give us, the better we can plan and the smoother your move will go. Rushed moves mean less time to prep, and that’s when things get missed or damaged.

If your move involves long-distance travel or storage, add extra time. Coordinating logistics across state lines or arranging temporary storage takes longer than a local move across town.

We give you a firm arrival window and we stick to it. If something happens—traffic accident, truck breakdown, whatever—we call you immediately and give you an updated ETA. You’re not sitting there wondering if we’re coming.

Late arrivals and no-shows are one of the biggest complaints in the moving industry, and it’s usually a sign of a company that’s overbooked or disorganized. Fifteen minutes late might not sound like much, but when you’ve taken the day off work, arranged for building access, and coordinated with the new landlord, every minute counts.

If a moving company no-shows entirely, you’re stuck scrambling to find a last-minute replacement during peak moving times when everyone’s booked. That’s why checking reviews and making sure the company is properly licensed matters. Fly-by-night operations disappear. Established companies with DOT numbers and verified addresses don’t.

We’ve been doing this long enough to build schedules that actually work. We don’t overbook. We don’t promise arrival times we can’t hit. And if we say we’ll be there at 9 a.m., we’re there at 9 a.m.
